This class will prepare students to deliver a well-organized speech to any audience, while building their self-confidence and public speaking ability. The main goal of this course is to help students develop a genuine passion for public speaking, but this course will also prepare students to eventually compete in tournament-style speech events. Students will learn how to write speeches according to the rules of different speech tournament formats, and writing workshops and lectures dedicated to crafting cohesive, well-written speeches will aid students in writing multiple speeches throughout this class. Students will also learn and practice different communication skills through speaking exercises and by presenting their speeches to the class. Through teacher and peer feedback, students have the opportunity to bolster their strengths, improve their weaknesses, and make their speeches even better. Exciting real-world demonstrations, including participation in an end-of-semester tournament and a potential field trip to a local tournament will be offered.
